I always say that I am impervious to ads, specifically Facebook ads, but some of our smartest/stupidest decisions have come from Facebook ads. We did the Bockfest 5k leading to all of the Beer Series races thanks to me seeing a Facebook ad. They were fun, the Hudepohl race would make me question why we did the whole series (those extra 2k’s really add up in the heat of September with no shade), but that made the beer at the end more refreshing. The Bockfest 5k was our ‘intro race’ into doing a multitude of races a year slowly getting us a little more fit so while it wasn’t always cheap it was worth it.
Occasionally I have seen ads for Virtual Running Club (not a sponsor) events and thought, that sounds interesting, but we don’t have the time for that between all of our other races. A few months ago I saw ads for their “Walk to Sesame Street” challenge looked into it a bit, and then forgot about it. The ads started popping back up again recently so I looked into it again. There are two levels of this challenge 100 miles or 500 miles, which in my opinion is a little extreme, done and logged at your own pace by the end of the year. Each of the levels includes a medal and spots for 6 character pins that you earn with each milestone you reach. Of course, the characters are different for each race which meant if we were going to sign up, we had to sign up for both distances.
All of the hikes we went on recently reinvigorated me to work on getting back into shape so I was seriously considering signing us up for this challenge. We’ve both been sitting around more than we should be so any excuse to walk more can’t be bad, and Lilly LOVES Sesame Street so she’ll get a kick out of our shirts and medals (which let’s be honest are really for her). So I ‘asked’ Joe if he wanted to sign up for these races and he agreed because he’ll do anything for Lilly and wants to get more active too. Joe is now signed up for the 100-mile race and I’m signed up for the 500 mile one because I’m just a lot crazy.
While any exercise we do won’t help us out before we leave on vacation I’m looking forward to being able to fit back into my dirndl’s in time for Oktoberfest so I have more than one option in my closet.
Don’t judge me when you see me walking the neighborhood at 10PM in December when I’m 50 miles short of completing the challenge.
