Our little girl is about to celebrate her second birthday and this past weekend we invited family and friends over to celebrate. We decided to celebrate a little early this year so we didn’t interfere with potential Labor Day weekend plans. We kicked around a few ideas for a party theme and settled on 101 Dalmatians. Lilly gets really excited whenever we play the movie and she especially likes the intro with the opening credits. She barks and howls like the dogs do in the movie, so something involving dogs was a natural fit for our little girl.
Since the original 101 Dalmatians movie came out in 1961 and the live-action version was released in 1996 there aren’t tons of decorations floating around, at least ones that fit our budget. There are lots of dog-themed, Frozen, Mickey, or other modern series decorations available, but nothing we were interested in. Fortunately, Lilly isn’t at a point in her life where the decorations aren’t so important so the Dalmatian plates and cake topper I bought were good enough.
The theme was mostly visible in the cake we got. I have a coworker who bakes cakes on the side and asked her to make a Dalmatian-themed cake for Lilly’s birthday. I was very happy with the cakes she made and will have to use her for our future birthday cakes.
For Lilly’s first birthday she wasn’t super mobile and the main goal was to just spend some time with family. This year Lilly is a bit more mobile so the focus wasn’t so much on the decorations, but how much fun the kids could have. Cue the water slide my friend purchased, the showpiece of Lilly’s birthday party. The kids spent about two hours running around the slide. They didn’t even notice when it started pouring down rain! They only stopped when we deflated the slide so they would eat and take a rest. Lilly was starting to turn purple and was probably seeing purple elephants.
Joe did a great job grilling hamburgers and hotdogs for our family and friends. We managed to get Lilly to eat before she opened presents. Lilly was excited about her new coloring books, markers, play dough, and a few new outfits. She wanted to play with everything right away, but there was cake to be had!
Lilly was excited when we sang “Happy Birthday” to her, which was great because I was afraid she would get scared as some kids do. We had to keep her from sticking her whole face in the cake, but fortunately, she cooperated. She clapped along and watched as I started to cut her cake. Lilly ate her piece of cake with grandma and managed to hang at the party a little longer until it was finally time for bed.
Our family and friends are so loving and generous. We couldn’t be more thankful to them for coming over to help us celebrate Lilly’s birthday. Happy Birthday, Lilly!
