This year Halloween fell on a Sunday. It was one of the nicest days weather-wise in recent memory and the best so far in Lilly’s lifetime.
Lilly’s first Halloween in 2019 was cold and rainy. We barely got any trick-or-treaters and didn’t take Lilly out of the house. Lilly’s second Halloween in 2020 was a bit better, but it was still very cold. We took Lilly around but didn’t stay out too long. Even though the weather was great this year, my ankle is still recovering so long walks were out of the question.
Joe’s brother smoked brisket for dinner and invited everyone over to enjoy it before trick-or-treat started. After the kids woke up from their naps and everyone got into their costumes, we loaded up into the double stroller. Larry filled up the tires with air while getting out the bonfire pit for him and mom to hand out candy. With having tenants in the basement we didn’t have to rely on a table at the end of the driveway to give out candy as we did in 2020.
I followed along at my own pace as Joe carted the kids over to his brothers’ house to meet up with family before the festivities would officially begin. As soon as we got there, Lilly was handed a piece of candy so feeding her actual food became a challenge. Fortunately, the food served was delicious and I managed to get her and Elliot to eat some cheesy potatoes and mac and cheese before she was handed more candy. ‘Tis the season for sugar rushes and only semi-healthy eating. Joe’s Mom, Dad, sister, and Oma (grandmother) were also there so Lilly got all of the attention.

After getting some family photos, we went out into the night to get candy on our way home. We had practiced “trick-or-treat” but Lilly was happier saying “Happy Ha-ween” so that was our go-to phrase. Lilly is also well versed in “tank ew” and “yes pweese”. We were very proud of how kind she was. Lilly also had the responsibility to collect candy for her little brother too. She had two baskets since Elliot isn’t able to walk around with her yet, but not for a lack of trying.
We stopped and chatted with a few neighbors and returned to our house. Larry and my mom had a bonfire going. Unfortunately, they didn’t get a lot of trick-or-treat traffic since our house is at the bottom of a hill and a lot of our neighbors decided not to participate this year. We stayed out until trick-or-treat officially ended and cracked open some spiced apple cider from Sons of Toil brewing. Lilly enjoyed sitting in her camp chair by the fire. She understands what candy is now (thanks Oma and Opa) so she dug through her basket and found a sucker. She immediately put it in her mouth with the wrapper still on. Candy is a learning process.
It’s still amazing to see how much Lilly grows up from year to year and I know it’s only going to get better as Elliot starts talking and walking and hitting all of his one-year milestones. Thanksgiving and Christmas are quickly approaching which means I need to start thinking of Elliot’s first birthday party. These kids are growing up too fast, but I’m glad to be able to watch every step of the journey.
